NAPPANEE -

A northern Indiana church has thousands of volunteers helping package more than 2 million meals for an international relief organization.

Organizers say 8,000 volunteers have filled shifts of 400 people at a time this past week at Nappanee Missionary Church. This is the third year the church has packed meals that include rice, soy protein and dehydrated vegetables for the Feed My Starving Children group, which distributes food in more than 70 countries.

The Goshen News reports that after preparing 300,000 meals in 2010, the church increased that to 1.2 million last year and nearly doubled that this year.

Pastor Dave Engbrecht says volunteers for the food effort come from far beyond the congregation, including groups from many area schools and businesses.
