Farmer drops plans for big Southern Indiana hog operation

SEYMOUR -

A southern Indiana farmer is dropping plans for a 4,000-hog operation because of ongoing opposition from nearby property owners.

Nathan Newkirk says he's withdrawing his request for permission to build the hog barn in a rural area northwest of Seymour just days before a Jackson County zoning board was to consider it.

Newkirk tells The Tribune that some neighbors have changed their minds about his hog farm plan since he first brought it up in April. He says some of the concerns are "so far off of reality" that he couldn't answer them.

Another Jackson County farmer this summer withdrew his zoning request for a similar hog farm known as a confined animal feeding operation because of complaints from neighbors about possible odors and pollution.
