Conservation officers are investigating the shooting death of a bald eagle found dead in the Hoosier National Forest.

Hikers found the mature eagle near the Jackson, Lawrence and Monroe county line in south central Indiana on Monday. Officers believe the eagle died sometime in the last week.

It is not known if the eagle died where it was found, had been dumped there or if it had flown after being shot. An x-ray confirmed the bird had been shot. A necropsy is pending.

Anyone with information about the eagle's shooting is asked to contact DNR officers at 1-800-TIP-IDNR. There is a cash reward available to the person who provides information leading to the guilty party in this case.
