Indiana legislators to discuss child protection

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Legislators are set to discuss what to do about Indiana's beleaguered child protection agency.

A legislative committee that's reviewing how the Department of Child Services responds to the needs of at-risk children scheduled a meeting Thursday morning in downtown Indianapolis.

The agency has drawn attention from legislators following a series of child deaths and complaints about its statewide child abuse hotline. Statehouse Democrats have been highly critical of the agency, citing media investigations into child deaths across Indiana that might have been prevented.

Former juvenile court judge James Payne resigned as the agency's chief in September amid questions of whether he violated his agency's code of conduct through his involvement in a child neglect case involving his grandchildren.

More information about the committee's activities can be found here.
