SW Indiana county rejects merger with Evansville

EVANSVILLE -

Vanderburgh County voters have rejected a referendum to combine their government with the city of Evansville's.

The Evansville Courier and Press reported Wednesday the ballot measure fell by a nearly 2-to-1 margin.

Consolidation opponent Bruce Ungethiem of Citizens Opposed to Reorganization in Evansville says the proposal failed due to a grassroots effort against it and "the common sense of voters."

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke, a consolidation supporter, says, ""It appears that voters are happy with the direction of city government, and personally, that's a good thing."
