Fishers to become a city

Posted: Updated:
FISHERS -

In an election that led to a huge voter turnout in Hamilton County, the people of Fishers voted to make their town a "traditional" city.

Nearly 55 percent of residents voted "yes," but voters overwhelmingly rejected the idea of becoming a "hybrid city."

Fishers will elect its first mayor in 2015. That means there will be a full-time elected official running all of Fishers' affairs. Right now there's a Town Council President who's elected and a town manager who's appointed. They're responsible for day-to-day affairs right now.

Those who pushed for city status say this will make Fishers a real contender that can compete with other cities and ultimately give residents more control over their lives.

The transition will be gradual, with the first mayor being elected in 2015.
