In Indiana, 10-percent of the population has diabetes and another five percent is undiagnosed. November is national diabetes awareness month. 

Dave Wiley is honest about his health. Wiley said, "I didn't want to die.  If I eat this stuff, it would make my sugar get out of hand. I would have to put a needle in my stomach. And, I just don't want to do that anymore."

The Pendleton man was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in August. It's a disease that interferes with the body's ability to use and store sugar- and can often cause many other health problems. Wiley quickly realized he could fix some of those problems.

Wiley said, "I need to use my hand as a portion size for a potato. I want my hand to be the size of Shaq's, but it's not. This is too big for me."

One of the easiest and more effective way to drop your sugar levels right away is to get rid of sodas. Dave was drinking four 2-liter bottles a day. As soon as he quit cold turkey, he dropped the weight.

Wiley said, "When I stopped, I lost ten pounds in about a week. The weight was gone."

With help from Marsh Dietician, Mary Snell, Dave Wiley changed his food habits. The dietician says people struggling with diabetes, make sure you have only six grams of sugar of less per cereal serving, for example.

The nutritionist also told Eyewitness News more than a million and a half Hoosiers are on the road to type 2 diabetes. 

Dave Wiley is down nearly forty-pounds. And, in two months after the diabetes diagnosis, he's already off insulin.

Pharmacies, like Marsh, do offer free diabetes screenings. Marsh also offers free diabetes medications.
