Lawmaker cries foul over Fishers vote endorsement

A state lawmaker says a plan to create a hybrid form of city government in the state's largest town could disenfranchise voters.

Republican Sen. Beverly Gard of Greenfield tells The Indianapolis Star she thinks a proposal to reorganize Fishers as a city with an appointed mayor and at-large council would prevent voters from picking the representatives they want.

The community of 80,000 northeast of Indianapolis is asking voters Tuesday to decide whether to continue as a town, reorganize under the hybrid system Gard opposes or become a second-class city with nine council members and an elected mayor.

Gard supports a provision that would eliminate township government but says she was wrongly listed as an endorser of the hybrid plan. Organizers say they are removing her endorsement from websites.
