Early voting heads to final weekend

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Just four days until election day, and early voting is wrapping up. This weekend will be a busy one at the polls.

Marion County polls open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. In Hamilton and Johnson counties, early voting is only available on Saturday. You should check with your particular county for specific hours.

In Marion County, early voting has been down considerably since the last presidential election in 2008. They're seeing about half as many voters this year compared to four years ago.

But at the time, there were three places to vote early in 2008. This year, early voting is available only at the City-County Building. Still, we've seen long lines to vote at times this week, and that's expected to continue through the weekend.

"A lot of people have been asking me sort of, 'when is it quiet?'" said Marion County Clerk Beth White. "Well, it's never quiet. But my best advice is (to vote in) that period between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. It's not been as busy during that time. Over the lunch hour, very busy. First thing in the morning, starting at 8:00 a.m., very busy."

White is encouraging voters who have their own transportation to reach out to neighbors who might need a ride to the polls.

Parking downtown is a consideration. If you pay at the Market and Alabama Street lots, you will be reimbursed if you show a voucher that you'll be given after you vote.

But if you come during that quieter period, after 6:00 p.m., those parking lots are open and free of charge. Keep in mind, if you use a meter, you have to pay even in the evenings and on Saturday.

Early voting in Indianapolis ends Monday at noon.
