Marathon runners skipping NYC for Indy's Monumental Marathon

INDIANAPOLIS -

Dozens of runners planning to run the New York City marathon Sunday are signing up to run the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon instead.

Eyewitness News talked to people who drove in from Chicago and Cincinnati to register at the Expo when it opened at 4:00 pm. Just 200 slots were left Thursday.

A woman from Chicago said she decided to opt out of New York when told her hotel was still without power.

Though there were no guarantees she'd secure a spot in Indy's Marathon Saturday, she risked making the three-hour drive anyway. Now that she's in, she said she'd stay in Indianapolis through the race.

The NYC marathon is one of the largest in the world, drawing nearly 50,000 runners.

Despite the power outages, flooding issues, extensive damage and very limited transportation, the marathon is still a go.

That decision has come under fire from those who say it should be canceled given the disaster. But others say it shows New York's resilience while contributing $350 million to the local economy.
