Fort Wayne base could add 100 airmen if it retains wing

FORT WAYNE -

The commander of Fort Wayne's Air National Guard base says the base could add 100 active-duty airmen in the coming years if it holds onto its fighter wing.

Col. David Augustine says the 122nd Fighter Wing should know by next spring if it will continue with its current mission. That's when Air Force leaders and Congress will settle on budget proposals for fiscal year 2014.

Augustine tells The Journal Gazette the base that employs 1,200 people might add 100 active-duty airmen starting in 2014 as long as it remains a fighter wing.

He said Wednesday he's encouraged about the fighter wing's future in part because the Air Force's new chief of staff supports "blending" active-duty personnel, Air Guard and Reserves.
