660K ex-Anthem policyholders to share settlement

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

About 660,000 former policyholders in Anthem will receive shares of a $90 million that parent company WellPoint will pay to settle a claim that it underpaid them when the company converted to a stock company in 2001.

The Indianapolis Star reported Wednesday that U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt in Indianapolis approved the settlement last week.

Court documents indicate payments to most people will range from $19 to $425. Most live in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Connecticut. About 48,000 who were eligible have died or cannot be located.

WellPoint agreed to the settlement in June, ending seven years of litigation.

Pratt is considering a motion to award $30 million of the settlement money for plaintiffs' attorney fees.
