Bloomington man convicted of woman's beating death

BLOOMFIELD -

A jury has convicted a southern Indiana man of murder for the beating death of a woman whose body was found in a church cemetery near where her younger brother was buried.

The Greene County jury reached the guilty verdict against 53-year-old Randy Knapp of Bloomington on Tuesday after a weeklong trial. Knapp was charged with killing 28-year-old Stacey Lawson of Solsberry in August 2011 near the Newark Baptist Church about 15 miles west of Bloomington.

The Greene County Daily World reports witnesses testified that Knapp was using methamphetamine and blamed Lawson for the apparent suicide of his stepson two weeks earlier.

Defense lawyer David Hunter argued those witnesses were covering up their own drug use and that police too quickly focused on Knapp.
