Notre Dame proposes moving main road from campus

SOUTH BEND -

The University of Notre Dame is offering to move a main road that divides the central part of its campus from several university buildings.

Notre Dame's plan would shift Douglas Road further north away from campus in a project that would join it to the Indiana Toll Road's entrance and exit road to Indiana 933 on South Bend's north side.

Notre Dame vice president Doug Marsh tells the South Bend Tribune that the plan is aimed at improving safety for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians around campus. Some residents who attended a Tuesday night public meeting said they worried about a big increase in traffic.

St. Joseph County commissioner Andy Kostielney tells WNDU-TV that the current road is poorly lit and Notre Dame's project would provide a better road.
