Record sales this year have been so bad that sales of less than 100,000 copies in a week can mean a number-one album.
That's why it's a huge deal that Taylor Swift sold 1.2 million copies of her "Red" album its first week of release. That puts it solidly at number one. Swift is the only woman to have two albums sell more than a million copies its first week out.
The last album to sell more than a million copies its debut week was Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," with 1.1 million copies last year.
However, it had the advantage of selling for 99 cents its first week. Before that, we have not seen a number-one album debut that high since Eminem released "The Eminem Show" in 2002, with sales of 1.3 million its first week.
