Windblown sand forces Gary school to cancel classes

Posted: Updated:
GARY -

Sand whipped up by high winds spawned by the remnants of Hurricane Sandy prompted a northern Indiana school along Lake Michigan to cancel classes.

The Charter School of the Dunes canceled Tuesday's classes amid stinging blowing sand was whipped into a near dust storm by the superstorm's gusty winds.

The school in Gary's Miller neighborhood has classrooms that are in individual portable units. Principal Christine Pepa tells the Post-Tribune of Merrillville that those modular units weren't safe for students in the high winds.

She says the winds were blowing about so much of the lakeshore's sand that "it almost looks like a snowstorm."

Pepa says Tuesday's cancellation of classes was the first time she ever called school because of blowing sand.
