Fewer police, firefighter cuts set in Anderson

ANDERSON -

Changes to a central Indiana city's budget will mean fewer layoffs of police officers and firefighters, although the mayor isn't certain the plan will work out.

The Anderson City Council voted 8-1 Monday night to approve a 2013 budget that cuts nine firefighter and three police officer positions. That's down from the 29 jobs total jobs in those departments that Mayor Kevin Smith had proposed because of declining tax revenue.

Dozens of people packed the council chambers as members approved $1.3 million in alternative cuts and directed money to the police and fire departments.

The Herald Bulletin reports Smith said the council's plan leaves the city with little contingency money amid uncertainty about how much tax revenue the city will actually receive.
