Man accused of speculating on Indiana liquor license

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

An Indiana Alcohol & Tobacco Commission hearing judge will decide whether to revoke the liquor license of a northwest Indiana man accused of buying one at a state auction with the intent of selling it for a profit. That is prohibited under Indiana's administrative code.

The Indianapolis Star reports the administrative action against Slobodan Lakich is believed to be the first time the state has accused someone of being a liquor license speculator. Lakich, who has run several bars in Lake County, has denied the allegation.

The case stems from the state auctioning off a record 250 new alcohol permits last November, bringing in about $3.8 million for the state. Lakich obtained his license for $9,000 during that auction. He is accused of trying to sell it for $30,000.
