INDIANAPOLIS -

A small plane crashed during takeoff Saturday afternoon on the south side of Indianapolis.

The crash happened just before 1:00 p.m.  in the 100 block of West Sumner Avenue.  The plane went down in a neighborhood near some homes.

State Police say the pilot, 35-year-old Jeremy Milless of Monrovia, wasn't seriously hurt but was taken to the hospital with a shoulder injury.

Police say he was lucky since the two-seater single engine plane rolled over after the crash.

Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt Rich Myers told Eyewitness News, "Witnesses said he was taking off from a field in that vicinity and struck some trees as he was trying to gain altitude and then nosedived over the trees into another small field where he ultimately landed."

It's not clear if the pilot was allowed to take off in that area.

The FAA will take over the investigation of the crash.
