Parks board extends Monon Trail hours permanently

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Cyclists and others who like using the Monon Trail after dark can continue doing so without risk of getting a ticket.

The Indy Parks Board has voted to permanently expand the trail hours from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

While the trail used to be open from dawn to dusk, the board agreed to a pilot program last fall after dozens of cyclists petitioned the board for changes. Many said they used the trail for commuting to and from work, even in the winter when it got dark earlier.

They said they felt safer using the trail versus city streets and didn't think it was fair they should subject to tickets.
