Anderson looks to avoid police, firefighter cuts

Posted: Updated:
ANDERSON -

Police officers and firefighters in a central Indiana city will have to wait until next week to see whether a city councilman's proposal might prevent planned layoffs.

Anderson Mayor Kevin Smith's proposed 2013 budget would cut the jobs of up to seven police officers and 20 firefighters.

The Herald Bulletin reports a councilman offered a plan Tuesday night making $1.3 million in alternative cuts and using most of that money to keep the police and fire department positions. The council voted unanimously to delay decisions on the budget until Monday.

Smith says he'll look at any suggestions but that years of declining property tax revenue have left the city with few options.
