Fort Wayne VA med center suspends inpatient care

Posted: Updated:
FORT WAYNE -

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has shut down inpatient services and the intensive care unit at the Fort Wayne VA medical center to review processes and provide more training to staff there.

The Journal Gazette reports the shutdown Tuesday comes after the VA inspector general last year issued an inspection report saying it found inadequate management, documentation and review of one patient and inadequate monitoring of a second patient. It also found inadequate staffing on 23 days during a six-month period.

The VA Northern Indiana Health Care System says in a statement that veterans needing inpatient care will be served at other VA medical centers or elsewhere in the Fort Wayne area.
