NHL players tell league they're ready to talk

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK -

With only two days left to reach a deal before the NHL cancels regular-season games for good, the players' association has reached out to the league in an attempt to restart negotiations.

Following a call for the union's executive board Tuesday night, the players' association informed the NHL it is willing to meet on Wednesday "or any other date, without preconditions, to try to reach an agreement."

"We hope to hear from them soon," NHLPA spokesman Jonathan Weatherdon said.

In its most recent offer to the players last week, the NHL said a new collective bargaining agreement must be reached by Thursday in order for a full regular season of 82 games per team to be played. The sides haven't met since the NHL turned down three counterproposals from the union on Thursday.
