INDIANAPOLIS -

An 83-year-old woman has died after being struck by a van on the east side Tuesday night.

Officers responded to the report of the woman being struck near the intersection of East Washington Street and North Post Road around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. When they arrived, they found the woman critically injured.

The woman was taken to Methodist Hospital, where she died of her injuries.

Investigators at the scene were told a van driven by 54-year-old Jacqueline Shepherd of Martinsville was traveling east on East Washington Street. The driver did not see the woman, who was either crossing or had wandered into East Washington Street.

Officers from IMPD's East District, who are familiar with the victim, say she suffers from a possible medical condition that would sometimes cause her to wander into the street.

Neither Shepherd nor her passenger were injured in the crash and neither speed nor alcohol are believed to be factors in the collision.

The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification of her family.
