Monster energy drink stock has drastically dropped after the FDA announced they have reports of five deaths linked to the highly caffeinated beverage.
The most recent death was a 14-year-old who suffered a heart attack after drinking two cans of Monster in a 24-hour period. That is the same amount of caffeine as 14 sodas. The girl did have a common heart defect where one of her valves did not work well.
Energy drinks are considered a dietary supplement and as such are not regulated by the FDA.
"They need to be regulated. They regulate ice. They regulate Band-aids," said Wendy Crossland, mother.
As for Monster, the company says its sympathies go out to the family, but it continues to insist it is unaware of fatalities linked to its drinks.
