DNR, former governor agree on price for rustic site

Posted: Updated:

ROME, Ind. (AP) - Former Gov. Edgar Whitcomb is selling his rustic retreat overlooking the Ohio River to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources for the Bicentennial Nature Trust celebrating the state's 200th birthday in 2016.

The DNR says it agreed on a purchase price of $300,000, about half of the appraised value. It will be named the Edgar Whitcomb Nature Park and Retreat.

Whitcomb acquired the 144-acre Perry County property in the 1990s.

The heavily wooded site rests on limestone and sandstone outcroppings and cliffs and has three log cabins and a small barn. It's surrounded by the Hoosier National Forest and will become part of the land trust preserving land from development.

Preliminary plans are to manage the site as a retreat.

Whitcomb was elected governor in 1968 and served one term.
