Indianapolis convention bids hurt by flight woes

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Convention organizers in Indianapolis are worried that the city's declining number of direct flights to other cities has started hurting its chance of attracting some big events.

The city's $275 million expansion of the downtown convention center and added hotel space has opened up Indianapolis for more conventions, but Visit Indy CEO Leonard Hoops says the issue of nonstop flights has become more significant.

The Indianapolis Business Journal reports Indianapolis International Airport has an average of 140 daily nonstop flights to 34 destinations. That's down from daily nonstop flights to 45 airports in 2008 - and fewer than several cities going after similar conventions.

An electronics trade show that drew nearly 17,000 attendees to Indianapolis last month has heard complaints about flight access from the West Coast.
