New purpose eyed for slain WWI soldier's memorial

EVANSVILLE -

City officials in Evansville are looking to give a house that the community built in 1917 for the mother of a slain World War I soldier a new purpose as a place for military veterans in need to live.

The city recently completed some $12,000 in roof repairs on the James Bethel Gresham Memorial Home and is seeking a new owner for it.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports Gresham's mother lived in the house until 1927 and it later became a memorial to the soldier although many of its items related to him are now at the Evansville Museum.

Parks Director Denise Johnson says that the house could be given to a nonprofit group that fights homelessness and be open as transitional housing for veterans by year's end.
