Coats for Kids distribution day - 13 WTHR Indianapolis

Coats for Kids distribution day

INDIANAPOLIS -

It's a 26-year tradition: Bob Gregory's Coats for Kids campaign. Saturday was distribution day, making sure each child in need had a warm coat for winter.

Raven Lewis spent the morning shopping and keeping track of her kids. Lewis joked, "You have to keep an eye on them because they want to go down every aisle and grab the coats they see."

The Indy mother of four needed the help last year.  This year, with no questions asked, she got help again from our Coats for Kids campaign.

Lewis said, "Buying coats for all four of them is just really tough. The economy and the unemployment numbers. I just really appreciate it."

Last year, the Coats for Kids campaign gave out more than 9,000 coats, jackets, scarves, and gloves to help children in need. This year, more than 13,000 items were collected because there are more families to serve.

For 26 years, Bob Gregory has led Channel 13 and the Salvation Army to give out a coat to every child in need. Gregory said, "With so much going on in our community, in our city, it's incredible that people can step up and donate or give money."

Rhonda Gibson from Taylorsville is here for the first time. After losing her job and enrolled in school full-time right now, these coats symbolize much more, "Just making it day by day, and we thank the Lord. We are doing what we can everyday."
