IU medical school eyes Evansville expansion

EVANSVILLE -

The Indiana University School of Medicine is looking for a new location as it expands its Evansville program from two years of study to four.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports a committee is looking at locations including the Roberts Stadium property in preparation for the June 2013 expansion.

The 56-year-old arena closed last year, and city leaders have wrestled with what to do with the property. The City Council has decided to support Mayor Lloyd Winnecke's plan to raze the structure even though some members want to sell the building.

Winnecke says the medical school expansion could create a pipeline of physicians for the area.

He says he doesn't think the Roberts Stadium site would be large enough and prefers a park be put there.
