Elkhart County bans street fundraising in some areas

GOSHEN -

Groups hoping to raise money by appealing to passing motorists will have fewer options in Elkhart County starting Jan. 1.

The Elkhart Truth and The Goshen News report that Elkhart County's Board of Commissioners has banned fundraising on roads in unincorporated parts of the county because of concerns about the safety of people standing in the middle of the road as traffic passes by.

Commissioner Frank Lucchese says fundraisers often stand on the yellow lines when the light is green and semis are flying past.

The commissioners' action follows a recent move by Goshen officials to stop approving charity fund drives at intersections.

Violators could face fines of up to $500 a day.
