Indiana buying rustic site from ex-Gov. Whitcomb

ROME -

Former Indiana Gov. Edgar Whitcomb says he's selling his rustic land overlooking the Ohio River to the state because he wants the public to enjoy the site.

Gov. Mitch Daniels is to join the 95-year-old Whitcomb for a ceremony Monday in the Perry County town of Rome to take possession of the land.

Whitcomb was Indiana's Republican governor from 1969-73. He bought the Ohio River property in the 1990s and built three cabins there. Whitcomb tells The Indianapolis Star that it's a beautiful place with a terrific view.

A Department of Natural Resources spokesman says the state is paying less than the appraised value of the 144 acres. The Perry County assessor says the land could go for more than $20,000 an acre if Whitcomb sold it for development.
