Mountain lion report confirmed as hoax

SHELBY COUNTY -

Indiana Conservation Officers say the reported sighting of a mountain lion near the town of Bengal in western Shelby County was a hoax.

Indiana Conservation Officer Ted Stine responded to the area of the reported sighting on Oct. 10, 2012 and searched the area. He was unable to locate any evidence of the cat.

On Wednesday evening, Officer Stine was provided a picture that reportedly came from a motion-sensitive game camera on the property near the original sighting location. After further investigation, Officer Stine confirmed the picture originated from Missouri and was taken from the Internet.

The Department of Natural Resources has logged about 300 reports from the public of mountain lion sightings in Indiana since April 2010. The vast majority have the reports have provided no supporting evidence. Many of those that have had evidence turned out to be canines.

The lone sighting confirmed by DNR happened in Greene County in May 2010, but the investigation was unable to determine if the mountain lion was wild or a former captive that had escaped.
