New archbishop takes up Indianapolis Colts mantle

INDIANAPOLIS -

The new Catholic archbishop in Indianapolis says he's accepted an important part of his mission - supporting the Indianapolis Colts.

Archbishop Joseph Tobin donned a bright blue Colts scarf during a news conference Thursday, triggering laughter and applause from the priests and parishioners assembled at Saints Peter & Paul Cathedral in downtown Indianapolis.

Tobin jokingly compared his taking up support for the NFL team from retired Archbishop Daniel Buechlein with the biblical story in which the prophet Elijah drops his mantle from a chariot carrying him to heaven and the garment is picked up by his servant Elisha.

The 60-year-old native of Detroit has been the No. 2 official in the Vatican's office for religious orders.

The archdiocese counts some 225,000 Catholics in Indiana.
