Goose hunt to reduce population at Liberty park

LIBERTY -

Growing problems with Canada geese are prompting an eastern Indiana park to take steps to reduce their numbers.

The Department of Natural Resources says the rising goose population threatens the ecosystem and safety of visitors to Whitewater Memorial State Park in Liberty, about 14 miles south of Richmond.

The Palladium-Item reports the DNR plans a goose reduction hunt during regular goose hunting season. The season runs from Nov. 3 through Dec. 25 and Jan. 7 through Jan. 27.

Brookville Lake/Whitewater wildlife specialist Tom Carr says the park will remain open but that visitors should be aware of the hunts.

Hunts begin 30 minutes before sunrise and last at least two hours. Evening shooting is allowed during the two hours before sunset.
