Author condemns use of blackface in his play

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK -

The author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Clybourne Park" has withdrawn permission for a Berlin theater to stage it because an actress would be in blackface.

Bruce Norris writes to the Dramatist Guild that the managers of the Deutsches Theater say one of the African-American characters would be portrayed by a white actress and producers would "experiment with makeup."

Norris says blackface is an "asinine tradition" and he's urging playwrights to boycott their work by German theaters who use it.

"Clybourne Park" is a fictional telling of the events before and after those in the Lorraine Hansberry play "A Raisin In The Sun."
