National political figures continue their push in Indiana this week. Wednesday, Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) joined Senate candidate Richard Mourdock for a breakfast fundraiser at Mo's Steakhouse.
The race for Indiana's open Senate seat is a dead heat, with Democrat Joe Donnelly gaining ground in recent months. Democrats right now hold a slim majority over Republicans in the US Senate. But a small change on Election Day could have big ramifications in Washington, DC.
"This race could determine as to who is in the majority of the US Senate. So it's larger than the choice that was made during the primary. It is a choice that the people of Indiana have to make; it is part of a larger issue of who sets the agenda for the United States Senate," said Sen. McCain.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will visit Merrillville Wednesday afternoon to campaign for Mourdock. Both the Christie and the McCain appearance are designed to mobilize Republicans to the polls on Election Day.
The most recent poll from Rasmussen Reports put Mourdock ahead of Donnelly by five points (47-42 percent). That's with eight percent undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
Last Friday, former President Bill Clinton spoke at North Central High School to rally the Democratic base in Indianapolis. He came to Indiana at the request of Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Gregg. While Gregg's Republican rival Mike Pence holds a comfortable lead in the race for Indiana's next governor, the Senate race is too close to call. Recent poll numbers indicate undecided voters leaning towards Donnelly, who attended the Clinton rally.
