PENDLETON -

A Madison County couple lost their house early Wednesday morning, but escaped the fire thanks to their dog.

Crews from Fortville and Pendleton battled the blaze in the 9500 block of Constellation Drive in the Summer Lakes subdivision, which sits just south of Interstate 69 on State Road 13.

Kyle Hart and Jessica Noland were sleeping shortly after midnight when they heard their American bulldog, Hugo, barking in the bathroom.  They woke to find their house filled with smoke.

Hart told Eyewitness News the house has working smoke detectors, but it was Hugo that woke them.

Firefighters have not determined what caused the fire, which also damaged homes on either side of Hart's and Noland's house.
