CLOVERDALE -

A 90-year-old pilot was injured when his plane crashed in Putnam County.

Vernon Bothwell Jr. was flying his experimental class, amateur-built "Woody Pusher" model aircraft near Cloverdale when the plane's motor failed. Bothwell made an emergency landing in an open field.

The plane flipped, injuring the pilot, who was able to free himself before emergency crews arrived. Bothwell was taken to the hospital for treatment of a possible ankle fracture and a head laceration.

Investigators say Bothwell had taken off just minutes earlier from his private airstrip in the 4500 block of South CR 325 West in Cloverdale, about two miles from the crash site.

Police believe Bothwell has pilot experience extending as far back as World War II. His injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
