VATICAN CITY -

The Archdiocese of Indianapolis is getting a new leader, according to a published report.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop Joseph William Tobin as the new head of the archdiocese, according to the Vatican Insider. Tobin, a Detroit native, has been serving as the Secretary of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated life. The pope chose Tobin personally for that position.

Archbishop Daniel Buechlein retired as the head of the Indianapolis archdiocese in September 2011. Buechlein has battled cancer and suffered a stroke that has left him wheelchair-bound.

The Archdiocese of Indianapolis tells Eyewitness News they have not received word of Tobin's reported appointment from the Vatican.
