Evansville council now backing arena demolition

EVANSVILLE -

The Evansville City Council is now supporting plans to tear down the city's closed Roberts Stadium a week after some members said they wanted to put the building up for sale.

Councilwoman Stephanie Brinkerhoff-Riley said during Monday night's meeting that the council was forced to go along with demolition since much of the arena's equipment was auctioned off this summer.

The Evansville Courier & Press and WFIE-TV report council members say they'll vote next week to dedicate $700,000 in city money and $187,000 in auction proceeds toward the demolition.

Some council members said they weren't committing to the mayor's proposal to convert the site into a park.

The 56-year-old Roberts Stadium was shut down with last year's opening of the city's new $127 million Ford Center arena.
