MARTINSVILLE -

A fire in an ice machine caused approximately two dozen residents of The Waters of Martinsville nursing home to evacuate early Tuesday morning.

Nobody was seriously injured, according to Lt. Brian Collier of the Martinsville Fire Department, but three residents with pre-existing breathing conditions required oxygen from ambulances parked outside the building.

The Waters is located at 2055 Heritage Drive on the southwest side of Martinsville, housing 88 patients. Collier said only a quarter of those residents who lived in the section near the ice machine needed to leave the building when smoke filled their hallway.

The fire was reported around 12:30 a.m. and under control by 1:00 a.m.  All residents were back in their rooms by 1:30 a.m.
