Starlings, crows get 'eviction notice' from downtown nests

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Starlings and crows that make downtown Indianapolis their home are getting an eviction notice.

Starting this week, the United States Department of Agriculture-Wildlife Services will begin taking steps to discourage the birds from nesting on downtown buildings and in trees.

USDA-WS says the starlings are an invasive species that drive out native species and compete for nesting space with songbirds. Starlings and crows can also pose a health risk to humans and animals, along with causing significant damage to public space, memorials and private property.

USDA-WS staff will be in uniform and working from sidewalks and rooftops as they use pyrotechnics, lasers and recorded bird warning calls. If you hear loud shrill booming sounds in the evening, you're hearing the pyrotechnics used to discourage starlings and crows from roosting.

Downtown visitors and residents are asked not to feed any birds to discourage them from roosting.
