Lawrence firefighters taking over EMT duties after cuts

Posted: Updated:
LAWRENCE -

Starting Monday, the Lawrence Fire Department is handling all EMT duties after the city's 24 emergency medical technicians were laid off because of budget cuts.

The city says there won't be a disruption of service.

The mayor says the cuts are necessary and will save Lawrence nearly $2 million.

Firefighters are concerned that the ambulance runs may take precious time away from dangerous fire situations, leading to bigger fires because crews busy with EMT duties can't get to the scene sooner.
