Local government and business leaders are working to support continuing an Amtrak passenger line running between Chicago and Indianapolis that could end because of a federal and state funding dispute.
Amtrak plans to end the four-day-a-week Hoosier State route effective October 2013. That route has stops in Lafayette, Rensselaer and Dyer, with an optional stop in Crawfordsville.
Arvid Olson of Greater Lafayette Commerce tells the Journal & Courier that loss of route would be detrimental to the city's transportation options.
Rensselaer Mayor Stephen Wood says people from surrounding communities and St. Joseph's College use the Amtrak stop in his city.
Amtrak and state officials plan meetings on the estimated $4 million to $5 million a year it might cost the state to continue the service.
