INDIANAPOLIS -

Does your child have the need for speed? The USA Luge Slider Search is looking for Olympic hopefuls this weekend.

It's free, it's fun and it's a program determined to find Olympic athletes.

While the best athletes in the world reach over 90 miles-per-hour, these first-timers are operating at a slower pace.

And for Fishers mom, Pam Steinmetz, she's not expecting an Olympic performance. It's just free fun for 11-year-old son Zach. Crash included.

And they're getting help from athletes who got their start in the same program.

The kids with a knack for luge will be invited this winter to the U.S. Olympic Training Center at Lake Placid.

Fred Zimney, a member of the USA Jr. National Luge Team says, "These weekend clinics are simple. But for us, it's literally how we find new athletes. In Vancouver, at the last Olympics, 8 out of 10 of our athletes started in the program. It works well for us."

If your child wants to learn to luge, the free program is offered Sunday at the Wilber Shaw Soap Box Derby Course, located at 30th Street and Cold Spring Road.

The event lasts from 9am to 12pm, and 2pm to 5pm.

The 2014 Winter Olympics will be celebrated in February in Russia. Ninety-eight events in 15 winter sports will be held, including luge.
