HAMMOND -

A former worker at a northern Indiana animal shelter has filed a lawsuit alleging she was fired for speaking out about animal abuse and neglect at the shelter.

Rebecca Carroll's civil suit filed this week in federal court in Hammond against the Porter County Commissioners seeks unspecified damages.

The Times of Munster reports the suit alleges that Carroll reported instances of animal abuse and neglect at the shelter to Porter County Commission President John Evans in November 2011. Her suit says she was fired the following month for "baseless, unsubstantiated" reasons after working at the shelter for nearly two years.

Porter County Attorney Betty Knight said Friday she had not seen suit but that the county would be defending the firing as for proper legal cause.
