Cummins to lay off up to 1,500

COLUMBUS -

The biggest employer in Columbus says it is facing some serious job cuts.

Cummins says uncertainty in the global economy is forcing plans to lay off between 1,000 and 1,500 people. It's unknown how many of those jobs are being cut in Indiana.

In June 2011, Cummins announced 600 new jobs in Columbus and an expansion of its headquarters.

More than 5,500 people work for the company in Columbus. But the financial crisis in Europe, Greece and elsewhere is impacting the Indiana company. The company has lowered its expectations for revenue this year by $1 billion.
