ELWOOD, Ind. -

A Germany-based company that owns and operates wind farms across the U.S. is making progress building its first Indiana wind farm.

E.ON Climate and Renewables North America energized the first circuit at its 200-megawatt Wildcat I Wind Farm on Monday, allowing the project's first wind turbines to begin generating electricity.

Project developer Andy Melka tells the Kokomo Tribune that 27 of the project's 125 wind turbines were now fully complete and the remainder should be in place by the end of the year.

Elwood Mayor Ron Arnold says the wind farm is the largest economic development project in northern Madison County's history.

Nearly 200 workers have been hired to help build the wind farm project, which is E.ON Climate and Renewables' 17th wind farm in the U.S.
