INDIANAPOLIS -
Today you have a chance to show your support for Colts head coach Chuck Pagano in his battle with leukemia by joining the fight as part of a special blood drive.
Colts fans, or anyone who wants to help, can take a few minutes out of their day and visit one of nine Central Indiana Blood Center locations to help coach Pagano and other patients who need blood.
The Indiana Blood Center says it needs 600 donors every day to help leukemia patients like coach Pagano. All the donations made here stay here in Indiana. And while today is a special call to give the gift of life, it's something needed every day.
"We'd love to see people more often than we do," said Wendy Mehringer of the Indiana Blood Center. "Take this as an opportunity to introduce people to the concept, maybe as a way to be inspired. But it happens to high profile people, everyday people, it's up to us to keep folks coming in."
It takes about 45 minutes of your time to donate blood.
People were up early Tuesday doing just that, and it's expected many more will stop at one of the nine blood center locations today to donate.
When you arrive, you will fill out some paperwork, get a mini physical measuring weight and blood pressure, and in about 10 minutes, you will be ready to give blood. Afterward, you will get a cookie and juice.
And when you leave, you'll be given a poster and the chance to sign a card that will go to the Colts.
Blood is in good supply now. But it doesn't take much for that to change. And while this is a great reason to give - to support coach Pagano - it's needed every day.
That's why donors like Terry Woodburn donate regularly. "You always want people to respond in an emergency," Woodburn said. "So the coach has an emergency and hopefully we will support him, but also the bigger cause, which is the entire community."
